Summary: The story begins in the distant future in the far reaches of the galaxy. The Human Galactic Alliance has been constantly fighting for its survival against a grotesque race of beings. During an intense battle, the young lieutenant Red (played by Kaito Ishikawa) and his humanoid mobile weapon Chamber are swallowed up into a distortion of time and space.

Waking from his artificially induced hybernation, Red realizes that he has arrived on Earth, the long forgotten planet. On this planet that was completely flooded by the seas, people live in fleets of giant ships, salvaging relics from the seas' depths in order to survive.

Red arrives on one of the city fleets called Gargantia. With no knowledge of the planet's history or culture, he is forced to live alongside Amy (Hisako Kanemoto), a 15-year-old girl who serves as a messenger aboard the Gargantia fleet. To Red, who has lived a life where he knows nothing but fighting, these days of peace continue to surprise him.

Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet was pretty much the surprise of the spring season, and definitely my favourite. The plot develops nicely, and where the pacing has its hiccups, the story itself has the right depth to make up for that. There were a few unnecessary scenes or twists, still the plot fits nicely into twelve episodes. The character relations are pretty interesting. I do however feel like there could have been more character insight at least with the side characters, however I won't be too strict with that; it is only twelve episodes. The dialogue gets the characters across well and has a couple really lol-worthy moments without lacking brains. The art is pretty and colourful, the animation's up to date, and the music to me sounds richer than in the average mecha anime.
Gargantia had a few hiccups in between, however the end result is very entertaining and has the right depth for a few thoughts without just yelling values or psychology in anyone's face yet.
9/10 from me. Recommended not only for the sci-fi/mecha otaku.
