Of course Nakamori Aoko isn't gentle with the boy she'd never admit to loving. One morning, the classroom is filled with the talk about "Kaitou Kid," a jewelry thief who uses magic in his robberies. Kaito isn't impressed with this so called legend that reappeared after eight years, and says he could easily take the thief magic to magic. At home, thinking about his dead father who was also a magician, Kaito stumbles upon a hidden doorway in his room. He discovers his father was the original Kaitou Kid. But since he is dead, he wonders who the supposed Kaitou Kid from recent robberies is. Kaito puts on his father's hat and cape, becomes Kaitou Kid to search out the impostor." - Sky7anime

Based on the first chapter of the shounen manga, Magic Kaito, by Aoyama Gosho (Also the author of Detective Conan).

Anyone who has read or seen Conan knows this characters but few knows that this guy actually came first. Aoyama wrote a short manga about this guy before Conan which means his entire origin as presented in this story is entirely canon for his appearances on Conan. Speaking of Conan, he even makes cameos once per episode during the later half of the series, smiling briefly before he goes out of frame again. I´m guessing that means this series takes place before Kaitos first appearance on Conan(also so Conan wont steal Kaitos thunder in his own show :) ) Now some of you might wonder why I compare it so much to Conan? That´s because it is impossible not to, since they are so closely linked. But since I need to say at least something about THIS show I´ll say that I enjoyed it quite, but a lot of the individual stories followed a very similar pattern which made it feel a tiny bit repetitive. Also I did not like that witch character since she brought supernatural elements to what otherwise was a very realistic show(they always explained the tricks and illusions used by Kaito and other illusionists but they acted like her magic was real). But the overall storyline progressed in a timely fashion, and it was a good one, so I still liked it.
