In the year 2015, the Angels, huge, tremendously powerful, alien war machines, appear in Tokyo for the second time. The only hope for Mankind`s survival lies in the Evangelion, a humanoid fighting machine developed by NERV, a special United Nations agency. Capable of withstanding anything the Angels can dish out, the Evangelion`s one drawback lies in the limited number of people able to pilot them. Only a handful of teenagers, all born fourteen years ago, nine months after the Angels first appeared, are able to interface with the Evangelion. One such teenager is Shinji Ikari, whose father heads the NERV team that developed and maintains the Evangelion. Thrust into a maelstrom of battle and events that he does not understand, Shinji is forced to plumb the depths of his own inner resources for the courage and strength to not only fight, but to survive, or risk losing everything. |

When setting out to watch Evangelion for the first time i was filled with high expectations. Having heard of the anime as one of the most successful ones produced, i launched episode one with a smile on my face. Only to be met with disappointment.
This anime had the potential to be great. The plot itself is epic yet it is snowed under by the anime's focus on it's 3 main characters. Characters that after 2 or 3 episodes make you want to kill them slowly and painfully. With a spoon.
After a while you begin to notice that the anime has moved away from it's plot and has focused on the struggles of it's sociopathic characters. Watching people try to push Shinji into developing some stones becomes aggravating in a very short time, and considering it happens 5 times per episode, the anime itself becomes very vexing.
The plot itself disappears halfway into the series. After too much information in the first episodes you get nearly none in the last, excluding vague psychological and sociological references to why the human species is weak, obsolete and any over bad adjective one can come up with. Coupled with the fact that an "alternate ending" surfaced by the creators of the anime, all you eventually get is a sense of confusion and unsatisfaction.
Watch the anime if you want to form an opinion for yourself. But in MY opinion, that's all this anime is worth. Don't expect gold.
