I know there's more to it in the manga but as far as this anime goes, it's really misleading.
First of all, the title "Soul Eater" made me expect Soul to show some astonishing performance all along these 51 episodes. However, everyone just kept on stealing his spotlight, starting with Black Star and Tsubaki who got some serious character development all along the serie. Then, on the third team, we can see that Kid show some pretty good feats and that his weapons, the Thompson sisters, can very well fight on their own, much like Justin or Giriko. At some point in the manga, Soul watched Justin fight and wished he could similarly fight on his own. I thought he would undergo some serious training, but nothing happened and all he would ever do was transform into a rigid scythe and at most sacrifice himself uselessly to protect his meister. And about his meister, Maka, she even more steals his spotlight by having so many abilities. In the anime, she is even shown to be a weapon-type human but chose to fight as a meister. Way to belittle Soul!
The second misconception is the summary of the serie, stating that they are on a hunt to collect 99 kishin eggs and a witch soul. It seems this only applied to the first episode, and the characters never moved in that direction after that.
There's a lot more things which are confusing in this serie, at least to me, but I would like to end by saying that overall, it is an anime that is somehow worth watching thanks to some occasional good moments, whether for fights or for humor.
