Gurren Lagann takes place in a fictional future where Earth is ruled by the Spiral King, Lord Genome, who forces mankind to live in isolated subterranean villages that have no contact with the surface world or other villages. These villages are under constant threat of earthquakes, so select villagers called diggers are relegated to expand their homes deeper underground. Simon, a meek young digger who is ostracized by his peers, finds solace in his best friend and older brother figure, an eccentric delinquent named Kamina, who allows Simon to join his gang, Team Gurren, to help him achieve his dream of visiting the surface world. |

Lost Momentum Quickly But Still Pretty Awesome

In the first season the show was epically ridiculous with combat scenes that were awesome because instead of going through the normal action/fighting anime sequence of long boring training sequences with the result of silly overpowered characters that kind of become tiring Gurren Lagann goes straight to incredibly powerful capitalizing on the extreme overpowered nature of Gurren Lagann to create entertainment value.
Also, in what other mech animes does one see a gigantic boat mech roundhouse kick a plane mech in midair? None that I've seen, that's for sure.
The second season or second half , whatever it is, really lost the momentum and style of the original show. Plus the whole thing about the spiral king's daughter being antispiral? Let's see, Spiral King = extremist human survival, kill the antispirals, genius genetic manipulator. Spiral King proceeds to build children and manipulating their genes. Probability of him including antispiral genes (am not sure how that would even exist cuz DNA is spiral in shape) would be nil. Then she disassembles after getting married? It's not like she was a computer construct. The spiral king built her.
Also, the fights were less epic, the story was attempted to be made more dramatic and intellectual, and it didn't really tie in with the awesome scene from the first episode where there are giant explosions everywhere and Simon is some freaking BA guy like Kamina was. But alas it didn't happen.
If the story had ended after the Spiral King was killed the show would have been better for it. As it was the ending was almost as bad as the one for Evangelion.
