Summary: Federation investigator Birdy chases the space criminal Geega through space to Earth, where he hides in the entertainment industry under a human disguise. Birdy goes undercover herself, posing as famous model “Arita Shion” that often uses a ‘space girl’ look. A male student, Senkawa, stumbles upon a fight between the two one night in an abandoned building only to be severed in half as he is used as a shield by Geega against Birdy. Birdy heals him from imminent death in some fashion- but Senkawas body, and life, are now changed and permanently linked to Birdy.

Tetsuwan Birdy Decode is about a human boy, who is killed by an extraterrestrial girl, whom then takes his mind into her own body and sends his body off to be repaired. Nothing new I know, but T.B.D. is unique in it's own right.

It is hard to talk about T.B.D. and not reveal some spoilers about the show, as the plot moves on in each episode, revealing more of the mystery hinted at near the start of the series. This first season focuses upon Senkawa, the main human protagonist. The story is about him attempting to adapt to his situation, whilst trying to live his normal life, which is frequently interrupted by Birdy's occupation as a "Federation Investigator" (Galactic Police Officer). Also, the story doesn't try to pair Senkawa and Birdy together as a couple, which I find most compelling about the series. Through the course of the 12 episodes they learn everything about how the other reacts to situation, and become companions for one another.

The dialogue contained within the show is superb, the voice actors really get the character's emotions across and this really helps to portray their state of mind, be it love, bliss, anguish or fury.

The animation for the show is smooth and fluid, and the fight scenes within are fast paced, taking advantage of an agile female lead to pull off some impressive combat sequences. The animation during the spaceship sequences are fluid and graceful on the levels of Gundam. The design of Birdy's ship is impressive as well, you can easily see the inspiration and admire how accurate the motions are.

Entertainment wise, the show had me guessing up till about episode 10 of 12. After that point it becomes a little obvious, but your so near the end you want to see if your assumptions pan out or if they take it in a different direction. Contrasts between Senkawa and Birdy will have you chuckling, as will Senkawa's reactions to the aliens he meets during his time with Birdy. The fights are unique to the species currently being fought against in that episode, as each requires a variation of Birdy's combat style.

In conclusion, Tetsuwan Birdy Decode is an entertaining mix of action, mystery, comedy, romance, emotion and science fiction. It is highly entertaining, it satisfies both my wants of decent battles and comedy, whilst throwing in a true friendship story and twisted antagonists. A highly enjoyable watch, and I thoroughly recommend it.
