Though Toriko seems to be geared towards a very young audience, it is also entertaining for older viewers. Everything is overwhelming and exaggerating from characters to foods to abilities but, I find it very creative. Each episode is full of adventure and pure wonder because none of things actually exist. In terms of genre, it's a shonen adventure with its fair share of science fiction and slice of life/drama. The two protagonists, Toriko and Komatsu, are quite lovable. Toriko may be brawny but, he isn't all about fighting. The creator made him an intelligent character that assesses his surroundings and knows a vast amount of information about his opponents/creatures/etc. Toriko values his friendship with Komatsu who on the other hand is much smaller in size. Komatsu provides comic relief throughout the episodes and he is often the helpless character but, his strengths lies else where. With the ability to listen to the voices of the ingredients, he is a talented chef and provides good insight on situations. The depiction of various characters range from comedic to "weird". No one is "normal". haha
The actual animation is average but, the scenery that were designed for the animation are amazing. The team working on Toriko have a group of talented artists and I say this because they render the rocky landscapes beautifully. The dialogue is good because they cut to the chase. This anime is not dark. There is no blood and gore, just lots of interesting foods. The overall tone is positive. I recommend to viewers who are fans of shonen anime and are looking for something with more than just the typical fighting.
