In a future where the world has been ravaged by a nuclear apocalyse, there exists salvation in a domed city named "Romdo", where humans and their android servants, the AutoReiv, live in. Under the implementation of complete management control, it is a paradise where feelings are literally discarded, and the governing council dictates the way of life the citizens should live. But this utopian landscape is soon broken by a series of mystifying murders. Re-l Mayer, a female inspector from the Citizen Information Bureau, along with her autoreiv partner Iggy, are tasked to solve the murder cases. She is soon attacked by a creature drawn to her which is neither human nor android, and learns about the mysterious phenomena called "Awakening", an event which draws her further into the case...and to the world beyond the limits of Romdo. |

"Ergo Proxy"'s plot starts out promising but gets a bit boring around the middle. I feel like this series could have been a lot better if it hadn't been 23 episodes long.
The beginning is really good, the ending's good but it's all the filling in between that bothers me. It can't just be skipped either because you have to see some of the events.
Usually I would downrate conversations that are complex and hard to follow but this is one of "Ergo Proxy"'s strong points. I often only realised the meaning of some things a couple of episodes later. ( read more)

I often only realised the meaning of some things a couple of episodes later. I might enjoy this anime just as much if I watched it a second time because of all the details I missed but I doubt I'll ever rewatch this.
The animation isn't the best and can be a bit inconsistent at times. Sometimes characters will look different from far away or from a different angle. Maybe it doesn't deserve a '3' but giving it a '4' wouldn't be fair to the other anime with that rating.
I can't say I didn't enjoy "Ergo Proxy" but I felt like some episodes were a waste of time. If you like this kind of sci-fi mystery, you should watch it but otherwise this wouldn't be one of the first things I'd recommend. ( show less)

Ergo proxy is a dark anime constructed in yet another post apocalyptic world. It takes a few episodes for the story to develop, but from the initial episode, you can feel that this anime is a little bit grimy and very dark. This is portrayed through not only dialogue but the use of morbid colours in the animation.
The Story centres itself around a detective in a government agency, investigating murders of humans and also there robotic servants. It depicts an elitist community, in which not all people are equal. Eventually supernatural drama involves ( read more)

The ending is somewhat confusing at best, I was left in a similar state of mind to that of the aftermath of Evangelion. As with most animes, a lot is lost in translation, if you are able to read japanese while not able to keep up to listening to it, I would recommend finding japanese subs.
All in all, the series is different to a lot of other post apoc animes, and has quiet good character development over the season. It is very watchable and I would recommend it to people who enjoyed Evangelion and Elfen Lied.

It's a little hard to catch up on and understand unless you like to think and you watch the episodes one after the other and finish the series quickly.
Mind you, it has great scenes where you get hooked. Really nice and greatly drawn animation to the point where they used colors for the details instead of pencil marks to make it look excellent, yet simple. Eeire and dark are two words to describe it, and my favorite part would have to be the very interesting foes

This is a very complex anime. If you are not capable of really contemplating the symbollism in it, you will not understand it. But it is very rich in imagery and very well thought-out, in addition to being somewhat philosophical. Definitely worth a watch.
