Summary: |
The story takes place in the far future of the 51st Century A.D.
While visiting Luna for the festival, Viscount Albert de Morcerf and Baron Franz d'Epinay make the acquaintance of the Count of Monte Cristo, a self-made nobleman. When they part, the Count promises to visit Albert in Paris. After he arrives, he introduces himself to the most powerful families in France (the Morcerfs, the Danglars, and the Villeforts).
The general plot of Gankutsuou, while broadly the same as the novel on which it is based, changes many aspects of the source material. In the novel, the narrative arc follows the Count chronologically; in the anime, the story begins with Albert and Franz meeting the Count on Luna (which occurs, in Rome, many hundreds of pages into the book), and the Count's back story is pieced together throughout the series. The anime's plot includes supernatural elements, different fates for some characters, the disposal of several side-plots, and an altogether different ending. |

This anime is unique and a work of art. One may find the graphics strange or a bit overwhelming at first. As many of the textures look like wallpaper, but don't let that scare you away, it brings a unique feel and does look amazing at certain moments.

The best part about this anime, and what keeps you watching is mainly because of a single character, The Count of Monte Cristo. These are one of the most memorable characters I know out of all the anime I've watched, his character and story is one of the most compelling I know. Everyone is affected by his powerful presence, even yourself. His words and his actions resonates with charm and wit. As he undertakes his quest for ultimate revenge, you find yourself supporting him, hoping that his quest succeeds, no matter how much destruction and ruin left in his wake. A similar feeling brought about Light Yagami from Death Note. You just want him to win even though his path may not be just.
Normally English dubs do not sound all that good, but in this case the English dub is good, if not better when it comes to the count. The English voice for the count is powerful and i find the choice of words better than the Japanese version.
There are a few downsides. The story takes time to pickup, but it is necessary to build character depth and plot. About in the middle of the anime the heat gets turned up. Then there's also some annoying characters, particularly our protagonist, Albert. He is a bit of a loser and really naive and blind to the obvious at times,
and personally I did not like how it ended, but that's for you to decide. ( show less)

Very compelling so far. The mood and intrigue surrounding the Count draw you in, though it is Albert's genuine innocence that makes you care what happens next. He is caught like a fly in a web, and is being toyed with like a cat plays with a mouse - though remaining almost completely unaware of the fact. We become aware, however, of the very human, yet rather false and unlikeable adults that surround Albert's privileged up-bringing, that seems to focus more and more on his parents and their past, which may not be as simplistic and perfect as their ( read more)

Unfortunately, I can't get episode 8 to download properly, so if someone could re-upload it, that would be wonderful. Smaller files are also welcome.
I'm really looking forward to seeing how the story unfolds... ( show less)

Truth be told, I wasn't actually able to finish this anime.
It's got the most incredible animation style I've seen in a while, and one of history's most compelling storylines, and in general, it's just a highly stylised gem.
That being said, the storyline is incredibly mature- it deals with all the forcomings of humanity, greed, lust, revenge... and all the while the innocence of the main characters is slowly whittled away.
It's an incredible study of the human mind and it's vices, but it's something you really have to be ready to watch.

Very nice remak of Monte Cristo, i really love this story. Also have nice unusual animation. I think its sadly, because this anime is not very famous. Everyone should be watching it. This anime has not great action, but really interesting story. Sometimes i was crying :) In short, this is anime jewel and you must see it
