My cousin and freind both recommened this anime to me awhile back and ive finally finished watching it. Overall it was pretty decent. The characters were likable, although personally i did not find Gene that awesome or special (although he did get better at the end). Melphina was very sweet and nice, Jim was a good sidekick type, Asia was annoying at first but eventually grew on me, and suzuka...well she was awesome in battle but honestly didnt do much. The story was probably the best part, incorperating an interesting plot, even if it did get kinda weird at the end. The problem is that there were too many episodes that did nothing for the plot at all. I suppose in small ways they halped develope character and they weren't all that bad, its just i found myself struggling to keep watching at points (heck i even took a break and switched over to another anime halfway through for awhile). The graphics were decent for its age, and some of the fight scenes were actually pretty good, if not a bit too sparsed. This may not have really anything to do with the review but i had to watch a couple eps in japanese (which is strange since i normally go subs), and it was alot different, kinda. Like i had to watch the hot spring one in jap and it was, pretty pervy. I dont know if the english changed some things but i dont think this is a "all ages" anime. Overall i thought Outlaw star was a decent watch but nothing too special. Then again i personally am not that into the scifi genre so that may have somthing to do with my rating. However, if ur looking for an older anime thats free-spirited and got a pretty decent plot and likable (after a bit) characters, Outlaw star could be your golden ticket. (show less)

Most anime fans love a kick-ass first episode and don't like anime that takes two or three (in this anime's case, I think it was 5) episodes to develop and get a real story. Well, actually, anime that needs time to develop are the best of them all. And that's exactly how Outlaw Star is.
Characters, story, even weapons: they all take time to develop in this anime. It's always been one of my favorites and will ALWAYS be just that. I would recommend this to any fan of shows like Shamanic Princess (same production company) and even InuYasha or Fullmetal Alchemist. Give it time, though; if you don't wanna wait, however, skip to episode 5.
Anyways, an oldie but definitely a goodie. I hope whoever reads this enjoys Outlaw Star just as much as I did. (show less)

I first watched Outlaw Star back in the day on Toonami, and later saw a few episodes of the uncut version on DVD at a friend's house. I was very glad to find it here. While I've heard it wasn't very popular in Japan, and over here Cowboy Bebop was much more popular, I actually like it more than Cowboy Beebop, in terms of style of entertainment I'm looking for. Outlaw Star has surprising depth and design quality to the universe it takes place in, and while many of the characters have heavily used tropes in their designs, each has their own unique twists that make them highly memorable characters. If you like space combat, magic-guns, sci-fi, space pirates, shapeshifting cat-girls, cute android girls, awesome samurai girls, or the idea of grappling spaceships, or simply want an entertaining anime with a good mix of action, humor, and drama, and lots of badass characters, this show is for you!
