What makes this anime worth watching? Scrapped Princess goes through a numerous amount of ethical decisions that many people speak about on a daily occasion and poses other questions which is good to think about. Overall, it follows a basic adventure story where you travel through towns and places and interact with a large cast of characters with different personalities while facing down an overall huge enemy at the end of the whole entire journey. This basic story line has been followed since Galaxy Express 999 for adventure stories. However, it does not make this anime poor by any means. It's actually quite enjoyable to watch this anime. Though it has some animation problems, dialogue problems and can be a bit dry, it is not worth scrapping... (I know that was lame forgive me...)
I'll tell you right now people who expect lots of fighting and action... turn around and walk away from this anime dialogue and story rule this anime more than anything and the fighting is very static and not interesting in the sense that it is not like Bleach. I personally don't mind that but I know many people see magic, swords and such and think HEY ITS A FIGHTING ANIME!!!!
Story:
As I stated before, the adventure idea is not by any means original and many concept that they use are recycled from other popular ideas so it can be thought of as a tossing a salad of good ideas to serve an anime that should be enjoyable. To prevent spoilers, I won't really say anything of the concepts that they used but just watching it should clue you into the concepts that they tossed into the salad. Overall, the concepts mix fairly well for the most part but might come off as being a bit too much for someone to take in all at once.
However, concerning this whole basic concept which you will find out within the first 2 seconds of watching. Being a preson who is hated by religion due to a revelation, one can easily see that this anime makes points about religion. The "super neato" part of all this is that generally if you don't have a completely thick skull, your opinion slowly develops on the issue as the story progresses which is very enjoyable.
Watching it today, one might just say it is a typical anime which is why I cast this as being average and not anything above average. However the score decreased also because of the overall obvious pop culture concepts being cast in and being just a bit too overwhelming for one anime to take.
Characters:
For characters, they follow typical rules for a good story. You have a very formidable knight that has great power, accompanied by a powerful magician... This is no new concept. As for the princess that travels with them, she is a typical himedere with some differences. You also encounter goofballs and other amazingly powerful foes. However, many of these characters do grow on you or at least some do to make you want to watch the series.
Possible spoiler:
The major problem is that many people in the story are very static and don't change as much as you like them to. With little character development, the author has caused the viewer to not attach themselves too well with the characters. In fact most character development occurs outside of the main three characters!!!
It also might not be my cup of tea but overall the princess comes off as being very... bland... Generally a dere character is amusing and lovable but there are very few qualities that make this character lovable and attachable and to have very little character development makes the character even less lovable for that matter.
End Spoiler
Dialogue:
For the most part, the dialogue was decently well thought out however there are times where the dialogue actually forgets about certain ideas and concepts that exist in the actual world which make you pause and ask yourself... Did the author forget about that concept or just tried to say it because it sounded nice at the time hoping you wouldn't remember...
There are some point where they do repeated jokes and they stop becoming funny and you just want to skip over but it is very rare. These flaws are rare but I'm a knit picket which is why I did not give an excellent rating.
Animation: Overall, there are very few times the animation disappointed me. Generally fighting scenes lacked luster and were stale in comparison to Bleach fights but they were enjoyable to spice things up. There are very familiar and reused animations... expecially with certain scenes that you can tell they were trying to save money on.
Entertainment:
The show is amusing. It has comedy, tragedy, action and drama... all that fun stuff. Overall though because of not being able to open myself up to the characters fully, the tragedy scenes did not produce tears which is really unfortunate. There were some times I was tempted to skip ahead but I watched through the whole thing and enjoyed myself. Were there times I was disappointed? Yes... Where? Can't tell you sorry.
Worth watching again? Maybe if you have nothing new to watch just for fun but it isn't one of those animes that you could watch over and over again
Worth watching in English? Hmmm... Overall the cast did a spectacular job in english... there were only a few parts that were really terrible but it was directed by CRISPIN FREEMAN which is reason enough to watch it in English.
Hope this helped you. (
